Shubman Gill was over the moon after guiding India to a historic Test win over England at Edgbaston on Sunday — his maiden victory as captain of the country team.
The emphatic 336-run victory not just leveled the five-match series at 1-1 but also recorded India's first Test victory at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
It was a historic victory for the Indian team, with Gill's dominant innings of 269 and 161 in the two innings earning him widespread acclaim. Fast bowler Akash Deep also delivered a crucial performance, taking a match haul of 10 wickets to rout the English batting order.
Looking back at the victory and the grueling nature of Test cricket, Gill went on social media with a short but sentimental message: "Be in love with the grind and the game will give back," he tweeted.
The atmosphere within the Indian camp was ecstatic, with several players expressing their euphoria on social media after the record-breaking show.
Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant shared his joy on Instagram, captioning simply: "Amazing win."
KL Rahul marked the historic occasion by tweeting: "One for the record books, Edgbaston."
Opener Yashaswi Jaiswal expressed his delight and wrote: "Wonderful game, really enjoyed it — everything with everyone."
Akash Deep, who put in a breakthrough show with the ball, too looked back at the moment:
"History made at Edgbaston — grit, glory, and a game we'll never forget. Serving the nation with pride – Deep."
Deep was the hero with the ball for England's second innings, grabbing 6 for 99 and finishing his first Test five-for, part of his 10-wicket match haul. India bowled England out for 271 in their second innings, winning a record-breaking victory.
The Edgbaston victory is close to India's heart, having played eight Tests there earlier without ever winning — losing seven and drawing one. Their opening effort at the ground in 2022 had ended in despair as England staged their record highest-ever run chase in Test cricket, scoring 378.
But this time around, India did the turnabout. England, pursuing a huge total of 608, crumbled under pressure as Akash Deep led the Indian charge and destroyed the top order to secure a memorable victory for his team.
